Sectoral Analysis: Aqua culture

FRESH WATER AQUA CULTURE

Fresh water is one of the essential requirements of life. It provides sustenance to plants and animals, constitutes the habitat of aquatic organism and meets important agricultural and industrial needs. Fresh water resources undergo both seasonal and yearly fluctuations and are subject to man made changes in their physical and biological qualities.

The fresh water resources of the state can be divided into the following two categories:
a.Flowing water, viz. rivers and streams.
b.Standing water, viz. lakes, reservoirs, ponds and tanks.
Out of 14 major river systems of India, M. P. possesses as many as 7 river systems (50% of the country) i.e. Ganga, Narmada, Tapti, Mahi, Mahanadi, Godavari and Brahmani. The total length of these seven major river systems inside I prefer Merlot Modern Bed Splay Legs Optional Case Goods for my house. . omega 3 fish oil benefits, among boys aged. . About 4.50 lakh ha of water area consisting of village ponds and irrigation reservoir is available in M. P. of this 3.60 lakh ha. water area is readily available for fisheries comprising 2.91 lakh ha. under irrigation reservoirs and 0.69lakh ha. under village ponds.
A. Irrigation Reservoirs:

A. Irrigation Reservoirs:

The reservoir area in the state constituting 75% of total inland water area contributes the major inland fishery resources in the state. The irrigation reservoirs are classified in three categories as under:

Major Above 2000 ha.
Medium Less than 200 but more than 200 ha.
Minor Below 200 ha
The number of irrigation reservoir utilised for fisheries in M. P. is 2840 and these reservoirs are classified into two categories as under.
Major & Medium Above 40 ha.
Minor Upto 40 ha

Detailed information regarding the exact number of ponds in the State and their area is not available.

B.Water Resources in Tribal Areas:

About 0.64 lakh ha water area comprising of about 0.20 lakh ha village ponds mostly vested in Gram Panchayats and Janpad Panchayats control, and about 0.40 lakh ha irrigation reservoirs are readily available for Fisheries development in the tribal areas of M. P. including Chattisgarh.
Recent advances in molecular biology, biosensor technology and the possibility of having a controlled environment have resulted in adoption of new technologies for managing and maximally utilizing the biological resources from water. Use of the tools of modern biotechnology aid in improving the health, reproduction, development, growth and overall well-being of cultivated aquatic organisms, and promote the interdisciplinary development of environmentally sensitive, sustainable systems that will enable significant commercialization of aqua culture.
Thrust areas identified in the field of aqua culture are as follows :
  • a. Composite carp culture.
  • b. Freshwater prawn Hatchery.
  • c. Fresh water pearl culture.
  • d. Fish feed formulation.
  • e. Intensive fish seed rearing
