FRESH WATER AQUA CULTURE

Fresh water
is one of the essential requirements of life. It provides
sustenance to plants and animals, constitutes the habitat of
aquatic organism and meets important agricultural and industrial
needs. Fresh water resources undergo both seasonal and yearly
fluctuations and are subject to man made changes in their
physical and biological qualities.

| The fresh water resources of
the state can be divided into the following two categories: |
|
a.Flowing water, viz. rivers
and streams. |
|
b.Standing water, viz. lakes,
reservoirs, ponds and tanks. |
|
Out of 14 major river systems of India, M. P. possesses as many
as 7 river systems (50% of the country) i.e. Ganga, Narmada,
Tapti, Mahi, Mahanadi, Godavari and Brahmani. The total length

The reservoir area in the state constituting 75% of total inland
water area contributes the major inland fishery resources in the
state. The irrigation reservoirs are classified in three
categories as under:

B.Water Resources in
Tribal Areas:
About 0.64 lakh ha water area comprising of about 0.20 lakh ha
village ponds mostly vested in Gram Panchayats and Janpad
Panchayats control, and about 0.40 lakh ha irrigation reservoirs
are readily available for Fisheries development in the tribal
areas of M. P. including Chattisgarh. |

Recent advances in molecular biology, biosensor technology and
the possibility of having a controlled environment have resulted
in adoption of new technologies for managing and maximally
utilizing the biological resources from water. Use of the tools
of modern biotechnology aid in improving the health,
reproduction, development, growth and overall well-being of
cultivated aquatic organisms, and promote the interdisciplinary
development of environmentally sensitive, sustainable systems
that will enable significant commercialization of aqua culture. |
