Science Congress: Children Science Congress

The Children Science Congress kindle curiosity of the children, provide the opportunity to unfold their creativeness and stretch their imagination, show them how they can play useful role for the betterment of the society. Keeping this in mind the first Children Science Congress, was organised in 1993 at Bal Bhawan, New Delhi from Dec. 20-23, was a unique experiment of its kind. The Second Children Science Congress was similarly organised in 1994 at Bharatiyam Gram, Nizamuddin from 27.12.94 to 31.12.94. The Third and Fourth Congress were organised in Guwahati, Assam (1995) and Hydreabad, Andhra Pradesh (1996) respectively.

In the Golden Jubilee years of Independence of our Country, the Fifth National Children Science Congress has been organised from 27.12.97 to 31.12.97 at Regional Institute of Education, Shyamala Hills, Bhopal. The Sixth National Children Science Congress was organised at Chinnai and Seventh at Goa and Eighth at Kolkata..

OBJECTIVES:

The Children's Science Congress which is specifically meant for children of school going age (10-17) years, split into two categories, 10-14 years and 14 to 17 years) has the following basic objectives.

 1. To provide a forum to children to pursue their natural curiosity and quench their thirst for creativity;

2. To provide an opportunity to children to relate the learning of science to the environment around them;

3. To encourage children throughout the country to attempt to know their immediate social and physical environment and its problems and to attempt to find feasible solutions to them;

4. To stimulate scientific temper among children through the 'method of science' i.e. observation, collection of data, experimentation, analysis and then arriving at a conclusion and then preparing and presenting a report.

 The idea behind this Congress is that a group of children will take a local area problem, link it up with the community and try to find a solution using, the methods of science. The project activity and large scale participation of rural children is expected to raise the spirit of scientific enquiry among the children as well as strengthen the science education in the existing school system. Lakhs of children and thousands of teachers are involved in this process, which starts at the block level goes to district, State and National Levels.

 MPCST supports every year for organizing state level Children Science Congress. Science Center (Gwalior) M.P. identified as a nodal agency by NCSTC, DST, GOI, New Delhi for organization of the congress in state. In the year 2000-2001, the state level Children Science Congress was organised at Indore. Total 240 children participated and presented their projects. 35 projects were selected for the participation in National Children Science Congress, at Kolkata from 27th to 31st Dec. 2000. Three projects were selected for participation in Indian Science Congress, New Delhi.

Ninth state level Children Science Congress (2001-2002) will be organized at Sagar in the month of November 2001.
